Academic ServiceResearch IntersetsInteractions Between Organisms and Environment During Geological History Primary Research Areas: l Mass Extinctions and Their Causes: Utilizing big data, supercomputing, and artificial intelligence to investigate the evolution of deep-time biodiversity and quantitative paleogeography. l Paleoenvironment and Paleoclimate Studies: Employing biogeochemical analysis techniques to explore ancient environments and climates, and conducting digital simulations. l Permian Stratigraphy and Systematic Paleobiology: Focusing on Permian stratigraphy, and conducting systematic paleobiological and evolutionary studies of brachiopods and conodonts based on collected fossils. Teachingl General Education Course: Evolution of Life and Environment The evolution of life is an eternal subject of human concern. The approximately 3.8 billion years of life evolution have been a grand and ever-changing process. Stratigraphic paleontologists strive to reconstruct this long history of life by analyzing fossils and environmental information preserved in rock layers. Questions such as how organisms and their groups originated, how biodiversity increased, how dinosaurs experienced mass extinction, what major global climate change events occurred, and the implications of life evolution for humanity are explored. l Pathways to Scientific Discovery: Exploration and Innovative Practice in Earth Sciences This course brings together a high-level teaching team from the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering at Nanjing University, including two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who have achieved significant accomplishments in research. The course focuses on the exploration and breakthroughs in modern earth science issues and technological application fields, selecting major topics from various aspects such as paleontology, stratigraphy, mineralogy, petrology, and geophysics, to tell the stories of science and its applications. The course also includes laboratory visits, online and offline scientific discussions, aiming to broaden students' scientific horizons and cultivate scientific thinking and research methods.
